Thammasat University Park is designed around the ideals on which the university was founded: equality, democracy, fraternity, and freedom. These four major themes drive the concept and programmatic layout of the park, which is organized with activity along the edges and a passive, open zone in the middle. This central area represents the ideal of equality: everyone is equal in the park and can congregate together in this zone. A pathway running throughout the park relates to university teaching themes, connecting programmed areas: a philosopher’s walk (social science), wetland learning area (science and technology), and health garden (hygiene and sport science). Along the pathway on small hill, a Bo tree represents Thammasat’s original downtown Bangkok campus.
The university is located in a flood-prone area, and the park connects to the campus masterplan’s water system through a canal along the park’s edge. The central retention pond holds water inside the park after a storm or flood.
Before starting design, Landprocess facilitated public hearings with university students, staff, and neighbors. This collaborative process led to program additions like a community-accessible library and space for yoga. The Puey Learning Center is located on the west side of Thammasat University Park.
